Portsmouth

Portsmouth (also called Grand Anse by the natives) is a city in Saint John Parish of Dominica. It has a population of about 3,200 people. The city was initially the capital of Dominica up till 1760, but the outbreak of malaria caused the colonial administrators to move the capital of the country to Roseau.

Major tourist attractions such as the Indian River, the Cabrits National Park, and the Prince Rupert Bay are within the city’s limits. The Ross University School of Medicine which has more than 1,000 students, largely from the US and Canada, study in its campus. There is also a sporting facility – Benjamin’s Park. A fish processing facility is being funded and constructed by the Japanese government.

Portsmouth has a local farmer’s market that opens three days in the week – Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

Exile One’s Gordon Henderson and local politician Roosevelt Douglas among other notable personalities in Dominica were born in Portsmouth.
