Springfield Estate
Springfield Estate is a village in the Saint Paul Parish of Dominica.
With a population of fewer than 300 people, Springfield Plantation Estate is located a few miles inland from Canefield and looks down on the Antrim Valley.
Spreading over 190 acres (including former Mount Joy estate of about 86 acres), Springfield Estate was established by French settlers led by Charlie Bellot. Bellot sold it to John Archbold, around the 1930s and after managing it for about 55 years, Archbold willed it to Clemson University in the United States in 1989. The university took possession after Archbold’s death and basically uses the estate for research and education purposes.
Archbold before his demise also willed 1,000 acres of Middleham Falls Estate, within which is the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, to international organizations for research purposes.
Former Prime Minister O.J. Seraphin lived in Springfield Estate as an official government headquarters following the destruction of Hurricane David in 1979.
A number of settlements have also sprung up around the estate to make it a farming and residential community for many people.
