Colihaut

Colihaut is a village in the Saint Peter Parish of Dominica.

With a population of fewer than 1,000 people, Colihaut is situated between Roseau and Portsmouth. It is largely a coastal village with many of the inhabitants engaged in fishing and farming activities. Many of the younger generations work for salaries or engage in private businesses.

One of the most exciting features of this village is the beach with its mountain ranges. The sea comes to within a significant portion of the village, presenting a fascinating beach with palms and flanking mountains at the far edges. The beach runs along the coastal edge of Colihaut village.

The village was seriously impacted by Tropical Storm Erika of August 2015, and the event caused many houses to collapse and the river-banks to overflow into the villages. This affected economic and educational activities in the village, leading to the closure of the primary school for almost two years. School pupils from the Colihaut Primary School were moved to nearby Dublanc Primary School where they attended classes in shifts.

A health centre was constructed for the community in 2017 after due consultations with the Roman Catholic Church, and in 2018 the Colihaut River was dredged to reduce the impacts of flooding.

However, some of the facilities in Colihaut village include –

  • A day nursery for babies
  • A primary school
  • A sporting field
  • A post office
  • A credit union
  • A health centre
  • Christian churches
  • A village council
