Cancer Society Achieved Its Strategic Plan for 2019, Yvonne Alexander Said

The Dominica Cancer Society (DCS) said 2019 was a productive year for the society, and that it also achieved its Strategic Plan. President Yvonne Alexander said the society will be focusing on achieving three-pronged objectives for the coming years going forward.

The strategic plan will entail –

  • Providing detailed treatment, care and support for people diagnosed with cancer
  • Harnessing sufficient resources for treating them via fundraising and partnership
  • Educating and advocating about cancer care to survivors and their families

In 2019, some of the activities the DCS successfully embarked upon include the Walk for Cancer Care, activities for the World Cancer Day, the Candle Light Vigil, and the Prostate Cancer Awareness month celebrations in September among others.

Apart from facilitating a “Men’s Health Forum” for men with prostate problems to consult with medical experts, the DCS also facilitated the establishment of a Ostomy Support Group for ostomy survivors and their supporters.

“The purpose of the group is to provide advice and support to individuals using colostomies and urostomies and those caring for them,” Alexander said.

The DCS president urged the government and members of the public to help with donations since the group relies on donations to carry out its activities. She said the society is faced with financial and human resource problem at the moment, and these must be removed for it to achieve its plans for 2020 and beyond.
