Titou Gorge

Titou Gorge is a deep ravine between mountains and with a river running through it. It is located close to the village of Laudat. On reaching Laudat, drive down the hill past residential houses and facilities such as the Domlec hydro plant, Domlec reservoir, and the geothermal extraction plant until you reach a manageable parking lot. Ask anyone around and they will direct you on the short walk to Titou Gorge.

Titou Gorge means “little throat” in the local Creole language. The hike to the popular Boiling Lake starts at Titou Gorge, and it is a water-filled gorge where adventurers could swim and explore the hideous caverns.

The gorge is lined by high cliff walls and filled with several ponds and spooky rooms. There is even a small waterfall hidden away deep in the caves within the gorge. The water in the gorge can be very cold to swim in, although there are warmer waters nearby. Guides warn that tourists should not visit the gorge during the rainy season since flash flooding could overtake anyone inside its deep caves.

In 2012, parliamentary representative Dr. Colin McIntyre said a reception facility complete with changing rooms, a bathroom, and a bar where the rum punch made in Laudat could be enjoyed would be constructed in the vicinity of the gorge.

The filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest took place in Titou Gorge.
