A Fixed Roaming Rate Is Coming To Caricom – Barbados Prime Minister
A fixed roaming rate is coming to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), said Barbados Prime Minister and CARICOM Chairman Mia Mottley. The Barbadian leader said a Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME) team will be working with Grenadian Prime Minister Keith Mitchell to work out a seamless roaming rate with telecommunication companies in the region.
Mottley tasked every sister nation within CARICOM to embrace a digital economy that will span telecommunications, fintech, and health among others so as to see rapid economic growth of the region. She said that it is against this background that all must work together to realize a fixed roaming rate that is both affordable and accessible for all.
“We believe that our ability to have a regional communication that is affordable and accessible is an absolute priority, it is against that background that we also recognize the digital economy can play a powerful role in the development of our economies period,” Mottley stated.
According Mottley, the current roaming charges are too high and financially damaging to peoples and businesses in the Caribbean community. She added that once CARICOM appointees complete negotiations with telecommunication companies on a fair rate and appropriate service level, the new fixed roaming rate may be implemented before the end of the year.
