Dominican writer Delroy Williams’ “The Ritual” has been featured in Gumbo, an American magazine debuting for the first time. The inaugural edition of the magazine was launched in Chicago on February 29 – the last day of the Black History Month celebrations. The magazine’s co-founder and creative director said the short story fits perfectly with the editors’ vision for the inaugural issue.
The Ritual deals with death within a disjointed family, and coming to terms with family death and divisions from the perspectives of a little boy trying to find meanings to life. The short story is backgrounded in being black like an African, and it paints life as an art that has positive and negative sides to it depending on where you stand.
Williams’ story was chosen from over 1,000 submissions from more than 400 creatives. He is thankful that his story was chosen, and he thanked the magazine editors for giving him the opportunity to submit his piece for consideration. He already contributed to The Flying Crapaud, an anthology of Dominican stories published earlier this year.
Williams disclosed that he is currently working with some Dominican writers to publish a children’s book, and that he is also compiling a collection of books titled “Moods and Attitudes” which will be published soon.
