Hoteliers and Tourism Operators Lose $1 Million to Cancelled Bookings

President of the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA), Marvlyn Alexander-James, announced that the hospitality and tourism sector lost approximately EC$1 million to cancelled bookings resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. She said as many as 76% of operators in the industry lost money and have been hit by the fallout of the global pandemic.

The DHTA president stated that the loss may increase in the coming weeks as people fear for the spread of coronavirus in Dominica. However, the Ministry of Health reported that there is no single case of coronavirus infection in the country and the government continues to implement every measure to contain the disease if it occurs. The fear associated with the disease is turning tourists and visitors away, with many businesses around the world shutting down to curtail the spread of the pandemic.
