Construction Ongoing On Marigot Hospital, Local Contractors to Win Projects

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that while the Marigot Hospital is currently undergoing construction, several local contractors will be engaged to carry construction projects across the country. He said that 1,000 cubic yards of concrete will be poured into the foundation for the hospital this week – marking the largest pour of concrete into any building foundation in Dominica.

PM Skerrit further revealed that about eight health centres are undergoing construction at the moment, and several residential buildings also await construction. He noted that the local contractor who built the health facility in Portsmouth performed excellently and has been awarded a second contract to construct another health facility in Bagatelle.

So he called for local contractors to bid for building projects if they are confident of delivering quality work. He stated that 70 residential homes will be build in readiness for the 2020 hurricane season, and 30 of these may be sited in Grand Bay. He said up to four homes will be assigned to each local contractor to build and the contractor may go ahead to employ needed workers to get the jobs done in time

“Even with the housing projects that we have, we are going to cut them into pieces to allow for a greater number of local contractors to be engaged,” he explained. “The idea is to break it down into pieces of 3 homes each or 4 homes each and give 4 homes or 3 homes to each contractor to build.”

The prime minister said that in a week time, contractors who are either interested in constructing the health centre or the residential homes can begin to register for accreditation. He also added that in the next few weeks, 105 families will be given keys to their own homes far ahead of the hurricane season so that they can be protected from the vagaries of weather if any hurricanes were to hit the island.
