Bishop Gabriel Malzaire has expressed shock at the early morning fire which burnt down a window of the Roseau Cathedral. He suspected arson given that the cathedral is currently undergoing repairs and that the fire engulfed only one window at the Cross Street entrance. He stated that the fire incident is being investigated by the police.
Dean of the Cathedral, Father Nigel Karem, reported that no one was injured in the fire and thanked police and fire officials for arriving in time to put out the fire. He said the fire would have extended from the window to half the building if not for the quick intervention of the police and fire department.
“We thank God for his mercies and the quick response of the Fire Officers, fortunately, no one was injured,” Father Karem said. “We await an official report from the police and fire department and other officials as to the origin of the fire and the extent of the damage.”
Bishop Malzaire said the cathedral was vacant at the time of the incident and that workers left vacated the place last week. He said the workers had already completed the roofing and were focused on windows and other internal renovations. He and Karem expressed thanks to people who have been calling to express their sympathies and concerns.
