The Old Roseau Boys School will not be demolished as widely speculated, said the parliamentary representative for the Roseau South constituency, Chekira Lockhart Hypolite. She made it clear that the government will not demolish the structure which is located opposite the Newtown playing field but that it will be rehabilitated as contained in the DLP electioneering campaign for 2019.
Hypolite said she understands and fully appreciates the value of the ancient building to the people in her constituency and that she will strive to see that it is remodelled for developmental purposes. According to her, the old building is a UNESCO heritage facility and the Harlem Sports and Community Club has been using the building for over 20 years as a clubhouse among other community functions.
“As the parliamentary representative of this great Roseau South Constituency, I shall do all within my powers to ensure that this UNESCO heritage building, a symbol of pride and an institution of superlative and educational significance will be professionally restored to its progressive developmental use and its architectural integrity shall fully be preserved,” Hypolite promised.
The parliamentary representative vowed that the “the Newtown Community Center shall not be sold, neither shall it be demolished and the rumour mill must seize from perpetuating such falsehood; the building was not leased or sold to any private developer and the government has no intent on doing so.”
Hypolite went on to say that with the cooperation of the Harlem community people, the government will fully restore the facility to its former glory so that it continues to be a celebrated and cultural heritage for the entire Roseau South constituency.
