The 25-year-old granddaughter of the first Prime Minister of Dominica, Patrick John, has been called to the bar. Kayla Jean Jacques took her oath at the Dominica High Court before Justice Wynante Adrien-Roberts on November 25, 2020 at the presence of friends and family. Her father is Kenrick Jean Jacques, a prison superintendent.
Before Kayla Jacques was admitted to the bar, her application was processed by Attorney Wayne Norde and Attorney Julien Prevost who argued that having her as a barrister and solicitor at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court would be a great service to the country.
Jacques thanked her parents for their support for her legal education and stated that her main career service is to provide free legal services to the underprivileged in the society.
One of my plans is to do as much pro bono work as possible because a lot of people are underprivileged in Dominica and we do not always have equal access to the court and the court system. So I really would like to put myself out there. I realize the value of assistance and giving so that is one of the things I would like to undertake as a new attorney.

According to the newest member of the legal fraternity in Dominica, Jacques said she is still considering whether to specialize in Corporate Law or Legislative Drafting, but would make up her mind when the appropriate time comes.
Justice Adrien-Roberts advised the new bar member to remain committed to the ethics of the legal profession and to conduct herself professionally at all times. She asked Jacques to respect the rule of law and exercise respect for the lawcourts.
Be humble, show courtesy, and respect to the court and your colleagues. Your word is your bond. Remember, the law is a profession of high standards. When you are practicing, it is not about winning, but rather, you have to be the best that you can be.
