Govt Awards Rehabilitation of Geneva Sports Field in Grand Bay for $476,000

The government has awarded the rehabilitation of the Geneva Sports Field in Grand Bay to Holford Vidal at the cost of $476,000. The contract will involve the total drainage of the playing field as well as cultivation of grass and construction of other installations at the field. Parliamentary representative for Grand Bay Constituency, Edward Registe, said the project had been overdue and congratulated the people of Grand Bay that the government is restoring the field.

According to Registe, the DFA and FIFA donated $150,000 some months ago to drain a section of the field, but the government will be undertaking the drainage of the second-half of the field and carrying out every other required rehabilitation works.

“I want to recognize the DFA and FIFA as well for having made a first contribution of $150,000 to begin the irrigation of this field,” Registe said. “We did put it to very good use. One half of the playing field is well-drained and we look forward to the other side being as well-drained. The Government of Dominica has made the contribution to rehabilitate the other half of the playing field.”

Minister for Sports and Community Development, Roselyn Paul, said the reconstruction of the sports field underscores the dedication of the government to sports and human development across the country. She said the economy of Dominica and of numerous countries are not so bouyant at this time due to COVID-19 situations, but the DLP administration has strained itself to award the contract for almost half a million dollars as proof of its dedication to the people.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Lucien Blackmoore, disclosed that the outfield and perimeter of the sports field will be fully graded. He said there will be underground drainage and perimeter drainage, and that proper vegetative cover will be applied to the field. “It will be done to the standard for cricket as well to the standard for football,” he said.

Several sporting facilities are undergoing rehabilitation across the island, and these include the forecourt of the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, a new indoor facility in Massacre, and rehabilitation of basketball courts in the country.
