Govt Is Now Able to Award Contract for Construction of Geothermal Project

PM Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed that the government is in a vantage position to award contracts for the construction of the proposed geothermal project in Laudat. He stated that the government has received tenders for certain components of the project and construction can commence as soon as the contract is signed.

PM Skerrit disclosed that the Geothermal Energy Development Project will position Dominica as a world leader in the use of renewable energy that could protect the environment and combat climate change. Apart from the fact that the government can export renewable energy to other countries, the geothermal project will bring down the cost of power consumption and increase profits for others and businesses that rely on electricity 24/7 to operate, Skerrit said.

The prime minister went ahead to express gratitude to Dr. Vince Henderson, the World Bank, the UK government, the French government, and notable partners that went above board to bring the project to its current stage. He said there is light at the end of the tunnel for the construction and operability of the project.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Dominica Geothermal Development Company, Fred John, disclosed to QFM reporter Richie Ferrol that Dominica and three French companies among other major stakeholders are the shareholders of the geothermal plant which is anticipated to export up to 10-megawatts of power.
