Vince Henderson: Loftus Durand and Lennox Linton Kick Against Skerrit
Social activist Loftus Durand and Opposition Leader Lennox Linton are still kicking against the fielding of Vince Henderson as the candidate for Grand Bay by-election. Durand said Henderson remains an active ambassador, and Linton called his nomination a Skerrit imposition. The opposition said the government is imposing Henderson on the people of Grandbay in what is best described as a dictatorship.
According to Linton, the UWP chose to stay away from contesting the Grandbay by-election because they knew it would be fraudulent, and they actually wanted the people of Grandbay to stand up for themselves.
The opposition leader, who had always criticized the leadership of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the entire DLP administration, said the character of Skerrit is questionable given his imposition of Henderson on the people. He insisted that Henderson is not qualified to contest the by-election because he has not resigned his position as Dominica’s ambassador to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS).
Durand said he spoke with the protocol officer at the OAS, Javier Lau, and she confirmed that Henderson is still an active national ambassador who has not resigned his position. This according to him makes his nomination and contest unlawful since the law provides that he must resign as an ambassador before he can contest at the constituency in Grandbay.
As it stands, both Henderson and the DLP administration have not addressed this concern yet.
