Panel Acquits Father Elton Letang of Wrongdoing; Transferred to St. Lucia
Catholic Priest Father Elton Letang has been absolved of any “inappropriate behaviour” charges by the Redemptorists of Baltimore Province. The former parish priest of St. Paul and St. Ann was relieved of his duties for six months following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. He was ordained a Catholic priest in June 2013 by the Bishop of Roseau, Gabriel Malzaire.
Although the exact nature of his priestly infractions was not revealed, the Diocese of Roseau and the Redemptorists of Baltimore Province said Father Letang must be relieved of all clerical duties pending the outcome of diligent investigations. The allegations were levelled against the priest on June 6 and the dioceses said they commenced an immediate investigation.
The dioceses said they suspended Letang and initiated investigations out of fairness and concern to all parties involved in the matter; and largely because it is the duty of the dioceses to take all accusations of priestly misconducts seriously.
Following a six-month inquiry, the Provincial Superior of the Redemptorists of Baltimore Province, Reverend Paul J. Borowski, said there is no substance to the accusations and that Letang is acquitted of all charges against him. He added that the priest will no longer serve in Dominica, but will be transferred to Vieux Fort in St. Lucia to continue his priestly duties.
The Redemptorists revealed that during his leave of absence, Father Letang was able to undergo intensive therapy and personal reflections geared towards improving his spiritual experiences.
After conducting such investigation, the Redemptorists can report no evidence of behaviour that can preclude Fr. Letang back to active ministry as a priest. During his time away from ministry and parish, Fr. Letang has engaged in intensive therapy and reflection which has enabled him to understand himself better. He was able to revisit significant moments in his life which help to contribute to the person he is today.
