Police Warn Truck Drivers Against Debris Falling From Their Vehicles
Police authorities have warned truck drivers against ignoring debris falling from their vehicles on public roads. Acting Superintendent of Police George Theophile said violators are liable to a $500 fine or three months jail.
Theophile said overlooking debris that fall from garbage trucks onto the roads is dangerous to commuters and pedestrians, and violates relevant laws in Dominica. He cited Section 82 of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act 46:50 and section 3:1 of the Litter Act chapter 40:61 as parts of the laws being violated by the offence. He also warned against throwing litters out of moving vehicles.
“The loose chips, stones, gravels, sand and other such materials, or objects on the public roads in Dominica are very dangerous to motorists and other road users,” he stated. “Section 82:1 places the responsibility on the truck drivers to ensure that no object or things fall on the road while being transported from one point to another.”
The superintendent of police in charge of the central division stated that it is the duty of truck drivers to remove fallen litters from the road within hours to avoid the wrath of the law. He said convicted truckers will be sanctioned or imprisoned to serve as a deterrent to others in the country. He warned against overloading trucks with garbage and dumping of refuse on unauthorized sites. He said all hands must be on deck to promote environmental cleanliness in Dominica.
