President Charles Savarin on Budget Day Decries Child Abuse and Gun Violence
During his presidential speech on National Budget Day, President Charles Savarin said child abuse and gun violence are two major vices that Dominica is grappling with at the moment. Speaking at the House of Assembly, the president said there is a 16% uptick in the number of criminal offences committed by people who have illegal possession of firearms.
Citing statistics from the Criminal Records Office of the Dominica Police Force, President Savarin said influx of illegal firearms is to be blamed for the rise in gun violence, and also on child sex abuses. He warned that curtailing the evil trend is the function of everyone, and must not be left in the hands of law enforcement agencies alone. He stated that eliminating gun offences and child molestation is necessary for national security and economic advancement.
President Savarin also revealed that the police and all Dominicans should be praised for the search rescue they mounted for missing Kernisha Etienne. He lamented that kidnapper Alexander died during a confrontation with the police without revealing the whereabouts of Kernisha, but everyone should not rest on their oars until the missing 12-year-old is found. He said no one ought to go through the little girl and her family has gone through since she went missing.
