President Charles Savarin Laments That Teachers Are Under-Recognized

President Charles Savarin has lamented that teachers in Dominica – and everywhere around the world – are under-recognized for their immense contribution to education. During this year’s International Teachers Day on October 5, President Savarin said teachers must be recognized and appreciated for their roles in creating all other professions.

This is to underscore the assertion that “without teachers, no other profession can exist.”

Speaking at the celebration of World Teachers Day under the theme “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers,” Savarin said teachers in Dominica must work under the best suitable conditions to enjoy their jobs. He said the objective of the Teachers Day at the global level is to assess, appreciate, and improve educators – as well as bring attention to challenges of the teaching profession.

Teachers need healthy, safe and enabling working conditions that are free from prejudice and discrimination and they must be provided with safety measures, decent working hours, fair remuneration and career development opportunities

The president added that uplifting the standard of educators and education will improve the recruitment, retention, and motivation surrounding the profession. Given the natural disasters that have occurred in Dominica since 2015, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the president said he appreciates teachers for going above board to sustain quality education despite the coronavirus lockdown.

We witnessed how teachers were at the heart of educational response, not only in ensuring that learning can continue in spite of school closure, but in also supporting their student’s socio-emotional and well-being and doing so even at their own expense. While many studies have concluded that teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor influencing students’ achievement, teachers remain highly under-recognized.
