Dominica is a Home Reconstruction Model for the World – Melissa Skerrit

The Minister for Housing, Melissa Poppone-Skerrit, has revealed that Dominica is a home reconstruction model for the world. Speaking on the housing recovery project on the Island, she said the climate-resilient housing projects in the country are the first of its kind to be approved by the World Bank. She said this represents the DLP administration’s ability to adapt to climate change.

The housing recovery project in Dominica is the first of its kind full-scale housing project approved by the World Bank, thus making our island a home reconstruction model for the rest of the world. This project I think is a shining example of our government’s ability to adapt and respond appropriately to the impacts of climate change.

Ms. Poppone-Skerrit stated that all hands must be on deck to assist the government in realizing its housing vision for everyone in Dominica.

We must recognize that there is a role for everyone as we implement the new policies and adapt to climate change. And so we must continue to devise and adopt measures which are forward-thinking, and responsive to the unique needs and vulnerabilities of our island, Dominica. But we stand in the fact that there is much work to be done.

The honourable minister lauded the efforts and vision of PM Roosevelt Skerrit to navigate the difficult economic devastation suffered by the Island since the passage of Hurricane Maria.

Roughly five years ago since Hurricane Maria’s destruction of Dominica’s economy, and four years since the start of the housing recovery project, this Labour Party government led by the Honourable Prime Minister has been steadfast in acknowledging our residents’ needs with bold and decisive actions. The Prime Minister’s leadership has led to the reconstruction of this programme on more than one occasion to meet the evolving national needs in negotiating for bigger-sized houses.

As a responsible government, we must ensure that the housing that we provide meet the highest standards of quality and resilience, offering the vulnerable a secure and dignified place of abode. As a forward-thinking government, we adjust to the times and we continue to work to ensure that every Dominican can build a better life and look forward to a more secure future.
