DPSU President and General Secretary Bemoan the Lopsided Affairs in Dominica

The president of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Steve Joseph, and the general secretary of the union, Thomas Letang, bemoaned the lopsided affairs of the nation. Joseph said the people and government of Dominica seem to live by two different tenets; the government by the tenet of the rich and powerful class, and the people by the tenet of poverty and the underdog.

According to the DPSU president, the people on the streets and the political elites may sing the same national anthem and recite the same national pledge, but it is apparent that people in government and people on the streets do not share the same ideals that informed the anthem and the pledge.

He said it is even doubtful that they both understand the meanings of the things they claim to advance and uphold in the country.

Letang lamented the fact that until anyone knew anyone in government, no individual will access the opportunities those in government have. He cried that without political connections, no one can hope to live large in Dominica and no one will be recognized as a hero in whatever capacity; except of course the individual is a staunch supporter of the present administration.

According to the DPSU general secretary, the government only recognizes sycophants and shifts these to high positions of power. And if the government goes out of its way to mention anyone in authority, it is with the intention of demeaning them and reducing their hard-earned reputation in the eyes of common Dominicans. In his own assertion, social scientist Simeon Joseph tasked churches to speak up against the injustices in the country. He said religious organizations possess enough authority to bring about political and economic changes in Dominica. He decried the situation where people in authority have refused to speak up or strive to change the course in which the ship of Dominica is travelling at the moment.
