Boxer Delroy Jno Charles Wins Silver Medal in ALBA Games in Venezuela
Super heavyweight boxer Delroy Jno Charles won a silver medal in the ALBA Games in Venezuela. Charles won the first medal at the games for Dominica after facing off with two giant boxers. He beat Silva Jorge of Nicaragua on Monday to secure a chance for silver, and would have won gold if he had beaten Duvergel Yoel of Cuba on Wednesday.
Given that Jorge and Yoel are tall and tower well above Charles, he earned the nickname “Giant Slayer” for beating one and attempting to take down the other. Athletes in the Dominican contingent also achieved significant measures of success in basketball, chess, athletics, and cycling among others.
Keva Pierre secured fourth position in the first semi-finals for Girls 400-meter race with 57.81 seconds, and Cherister Durand also won the fourth position for the second semi-finals with 59.06 seconds. For the Boys 400-meter event, Kurnish Jean Jacques won third with 52.32 seconds.
In Basketball, Dominica beat St. Lucia with 103 points in a 132-29 result at the Under 17 game. Dominica’s Nigel Francis equally beat a Fidel Master from Nicaragua in Chess with 5/9 points in 9 rounds, while Dr. Lyndon Auguiste also won a 4/9 victory. Cyclist Ajani Casimir emerged in the top 13 after competing with almost 40 cyclists.
