Given the success that attended the Skills for Youth Employment (SkYE) programme, lots of organizations and personalities across the country have appreciated the organizers for a job well done. More than nine participants completed the training which was provided by nine or more specialized providers across Dominica.
The successful participants were awarded the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) certificates which would enable them to be employed across Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Lucia. The success participants are Matilda Barry-Carty, Julie Ann Charles, Eamon Gibbons, Dian Laronde, Ayana Mitchell, Merkwan Pacquette, Mariana Sanford, Kerry-Ann Remie Timothy, and Bertrand Telemaque.
The organizations that partnered with SkYE to provide trainings for the participants are:
- Achievement Learning Center (ALC)
- Adult Education Division (AED)
- Business Training College (BTC)
- Center where Adolescents Learn to Love and Serve (CALLS)
- Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT)
- Kalinago Connections Incorporated (KCI)
- Youth Development Division (YDD)
- Dominica Association of Industry & Commerce (DAIC)
- Dominica Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council (DTVETC)
The SkYE team leader, Dr. Rosie Lugg, said she was impressed with the success of the programme. She credited the participants for their resilience and thanked the trainers for their immense support. She said the trainers have been assisting SkYE to train young Dominicans to make them employable for the past five years.
She revealed that UK AID provides funding and grants to SkYE, but programme partners have been helping to deliver the required trainings to participants. She said that about 5,616 youths across Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Lucia have benefited from SkYE and that the training certificates issued to them will guarantee them employment within and outside the Caribbean.
Lugg disclosed that 77% of the 600 youths that commenced a CBQ course funded by SkYE were issued with completion certificates, and that 56% of the people that graduate from SkYE programmes get employed almost immediately.
SkYE country coordinator, Jules Pascal, expressed gladness with the success of the traning exercise. Senior programme officer at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Terry Braithwaite, was also full of thanks to SkYE for their initiatives. And the director of Dominica’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Paula Seraphine, also appreciated SkYE for sponsoring the programme that will likely bring employment to thousands of Dominicans.
