President Charles Savarin Talks to Russian Ambassador about Ukraine and Haiti

President Charles Savarin has told the new Russian Ambassador to Dominica, Sergey Petrovich, that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is unwarranted and must come to an end. He said the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has been going on for more than a year, and this has negatively impacted the price of food and gas around the world.

President Charles said this to Petrovich when the Russian ambassador presented his credentials to the presidency at the State House on Monday.

We are particularly mindful of the ongoing Russia/Ukraine war and the potential for a much wider conflagration. We, therefore, urge all parties to work assiduously to bring an end to the fighting and to find a peaceful resolution to this conflict. Already the impact is felt worldwide in terms of its impact on the supply chain for goods and services and on the price of petroleum products and food supplies.

The president also asked Russia to speak up about the breakdown of law and order in Haiti following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in 2021. He said Haiti used to be the wealthiest colony in the Americas, but the West Indies Island is plagued by killer gangs, poverty, the resurgence of cholera, and the worsening of violence everywhere. He said Russia can bring an end to the situation in Haiti by harnessing the resources of the United Nations.

In his response, Petrovich said he is glad to be in Dominica and that he looks forward to building on the 28 years of diplomatic relationship between Dominica and Russia. He said the bilateral relations established in 1995 covers freight, economic investment, tourism, culture, and education among others. The ambassador later met with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
