Pearle Christian
Pearle Christian, born on March 20, 1955, in La Plaine, grew up in a family deeply invested in education and culture. Her father, Henckell Christian, was a Minister of Education and Health, and her uncle, Lemuel McPherson Christian, composed Dominica’s national anthem, “Isle of Beauty, Isle of Splendour.” This environment fostered Pearle’s early love for music and education, propelling her toward a lifetime of cultural contribution in Dominica.
Pearle Christian’s Contributions
Pearle Christian has dedicated more than three decades to developing music and culture in Dominica. She served as a senior cultural officer in the Division of Culture, spearheading numerous projects focused on preserving Dominica music, mainly through teaching and training young musicians. One of her most notable achievements is founding the Sixth Form Sisserou Singers in 1994, a choral group focusing on traditional Dominica and Caribbean folk music. Under her leadership, the choir became vital to Dominica’s cultural fabric.
Christian’s involvement in music education extended beyond formal positions. She runs the Henckell Muriel Music Workshop, offering private lessons in flute and choral arrangements. She is widely respected for her holistic approach to teaching, focusing on technical skills and character development.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout her career, Pearle Christian has been widely recognized for her contribution to music and culture in Dominica. She was awarded the Golden Drum Award in 2016, one of Dominica’s highest cultural honors, and the Meritorious Service Award in 2008 for her outstanding work preserving and promoting the island’s musical heritage. Even in retirement, Pearle remains an active figure in the Dominican music community, contributing to choral arrangements and folk music performances while mentoring the next generation of musicians.
