Syndicate Nature Trail

The Syndicate Nature Trail is a celebrated hiking path in the Morne Diablotin National Park, adjacent to the Northern Forest Reserve. It showcases Syndicate Falls and the towering Morne Diablotin, Dominica’s highest peak, which provides a stunning backdrop to the hiker’s journey. The trail is recognized for its scenic beauty and ecological significance. This trail is particularly noted for its loop structure, which spans approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), making it an accessible option for many visitors seeking to experience Dominica’s natural splendour.

Dominica’s Syndicate Nature Trail

The Syndicate Nature Trail is positioned within the Syndicate Parrot Preserve, a critical habitat for the island’s endemic bird species, including the Sisserou Parrot and the Jaco Parrot. These birds symbolise Dominica’s rich biodiversity, and the preserve offers birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe these species in their natural environment. The Sisserou Parrot, in particular, is distinguished as Dominica’s national bird and is featured on the country’s coat of arms.

Constructed in 1993 with support from the RARE Centre for Tropical Conservation and Birdlife International, the Syndicate Nature Trail and Parrot Preserve aims to provide visitors with a genuine rainforest experience. It is a prime location for birdwatching, with the chance to see many of the 179 bird species recorded on the island. This area is not only a sanctuary for birdlife but also hosts a diverse range of flora, making it a key site for research, education, and enjoyment of nature.

Unfortunately, the trail was temporarily closed following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Still, it was reopened in 2018 after considerable efforts by Dominica’s Forestry, Wildlife, National Parks Division and various partners to clear and restore access to the trail and other affected sites.

The Syndicate Nature Trail underscores Dominica’s dedication to conservation and environmental education. It offers a window into the island’s commitment to preserving its unique natural heritage for future generations to explore and appreciate.
