Bernard Ettinoffe, the General Manager of DOWASCO, expressed his disappointment with the recent statements made by Chief Environmental Health Officer, Tassie Thomas. The latter had raised concerns over DOWASCO’s decision not to interrupt the water supply in certain areas, citing potential health risks to the population. Etinoffe deemed the remarks as unfortunate, in poor taste, and lacking judgment, considering the positive relationship between DOWASCO and the Environmental Health Department.
Thomas had expressed worries about the potential increase in mosquitoes and the transmission of Dengue Fever due to the suspension of water supply. However, Ettinoffe defended DOWASCO’s decision, highlighting the ongoing hurricane season and the need for the public to store water safely. He emphasized that DOWASCO aims to encourage water storage practices rather than discourage them.
Explaining the reason for the initial decision to interrupt the water supply, Ettinoffe stated that it was intended for major repairs along a road. However, upon inspection, the repairs were found to be required on a secondary line rather than the main line, allowing the repairs to proceed without shutting down the main supply.
Ettinoffe hopes that both DOWASCO and the Environmental Health Department can collaborate to educate the public on proper water storage, especially during the hurricane season. He underlined the importance of ensuring safe water storage practices without unnecessary interruptions in the water supply.
