The Minister for National Security and Legal Affairs, in his compelling address, underscored the vital importance of the gun amnesty program. With its scheduled conclusion on October 31, 2023, the community was reminded of the impending changes.
The Minister, driven by a profound sense of responsibility, made Parliament’s intention clear: a proposed amendment to the Firearm Act. Upon the amnesty’s closure, the court may be called upon to enforce a minimum sentence of five years for gun-related offenses, reflecting the government’s unwavering commitment to safety.
Moreover, the Bail Act, too, stands poised for revision.
Chief of Police Daniel Carbon, bearing the weight of the recent tragedies that hit the community, expressed deep concern about the six gun-related murders within a few short months. He urged the residents not to let the actions of a minority cast a shadow on Grandbay’s rich legacy. This vibrant community has nurtured cultural icons, athletes, medical professionals, legal minds, and nursing heroes, and it was time to protect this legacy.
The Principal of the Grandbay Primary School, Mr. Evans James, brought the pressing issue of young students arriving at school with illegal weapons into the spotlight.
The seriousness of the matter cannot be overstated. In his candid remarks, Mr. James highlighted the difficulties faced when engaging parents to address these concerns. It was a somber reflection, revealing a need for more proactive parental involvement in securing the future for our youth.
His words emphasized the importance of vigilant bag checks, a simple yet impactful measure to curb violence amongst the youth.
Furthermore, the distressing rate of school dropouts turning to illegal activities, like marijuana cultivation, was a concern that demanded immediate attention. The hearts of the Grandbay community echoed with commendation and support for this outreach program.
Residents expressed a deep willingness to collaborate with the police and fellow community members in the mission to restore Grandbay to its former safety. Concerns were voiced regarding the perspectives of young men in the community, creating an urgent call to unite and usher in a transformative change.
The community of Grandbay now makes a fresh commitment to unity and safety. This inaugural outreach program, a beacon of hope, marks the initial step towards a brighter Grandbay.
The Ministry of National Security and the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force are now set to expand their community outreach initiatives, extending this transformational journey to more communities on the island.
