Dominica’s Electricity Crisis: Trafalgar Power Station Repairs and New Generators on the Horizon

In a recent press conference, Prime Minister Rosevelt Skerrit addressed Dominica’s electricity crisis, announcing significant measures to enhance the power supply. He revealed that two generator units, leased from Aggreko, a US-based firm, arrived on November 10. These units, capable of generating 3 megawatts, are expected to be operational by November 30, offering relief from the ongoing load shedding.

Additionally, the government has procured 4.8 megawatts of power, which will be leased to DOMLEC. This move is designed to ensure there’s no increase in electricity costs for consumers. The additional units are scheduled to arrive on December 2 and will be connected to the grid early next year.

Skerrit emphasized the need for DOMLEC to improve its communication with the public, especially regarding load shedding schedules and updates. He stressed the importance of transparency and effective public relations in managing the current electricity situation.

Meanwhile, DOMLEC’s Restoration Coordinator, Daryl Dalrymple, provided an update on the Trafalgar Power Station. The station suffered significant damage due to a landslide on November 7, leading to a considerable power deficit.

This incident necessitated load shedding across the island due to a shortfall of 1.7 megawatts. Dalrymple explained the complexities involved in the repair work, particularly due to the challenging terrain.

The repair process has been progressing, with the foundation and steelwork for the pipeline now complete. The team is currently in the final stages of concrete pouring, a critical step in the restoration.

However, additional repairs are needed in a section known as the “clip space” to ensure the station’s full operational capacity. This additional work is crucial for the station’s functionality.

Dalrymple anticipates that the Trafalgar Power Station will resume generation during the second week of December. This timeline is essential for restoring the power supply to normal levels.

The combined efforts of the government and DOMLEC are pivotal in addressing the electricity supply challenges. These steps are crucial for stabilizing and enhancing Dominica’s power infrastructure.

With these initiatives, Dominica is set to overcome its current electricity challenges, marking a significant step forward in its energy sector. The nation looks forward to improved power stability and reliability in the near future.
