Dominica’s Housing Recovery Project (HRP) Set for Fourth Handover Ceremony

The Dominica Housing Recovery Project (HRP) has announced its upcoming fourth official handover ceremony that will take place at 10 a.m. on December 13, 2023, at the State House Conference Center.

According to a release by the government, the beneficiaries of the HRP programme will receive keys to their newly built homes at this ceremony. Of this cohort, 22 are identified members of the Kalinago community and 44% of the total grantees are women.

Under the joint auspices of the World Bank and the Government of Dominica, the HRP project provides resilient core homes with a floor plan of approximately 550 square feet to beneficiaries facing housing vulnerability. The emphasis is on servicing individuals and families displaced by Hurricane Maria. The government also states that the project, which falls under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development portfolio, focuses on” encouraging resilient building practices” and “facilitating capacity building of local contractors.”

With the reported aim of delivering “a sense of security and hope that homeownership confers”, government has divulged that housing support exceeding XCD 27 million has been provided under the umbrella of this programme.

Housing Recovery Project

The Housing Recovery Project (HRP) is a new, island-wide project designed to build resilience in the housing sector through supporting safe, owner-driven reconstruction of destroyed houses, across Dominica. Immediately following Hurricane Maria, emergency housing recovery took effect with the assistance of many humanitarian agencies.
