Dominica’s brightest students recently took center stage at the Inter-Secondary Schools Debating Competition, tackling critical national issues like brain drain and youth opportunities in the economy.

The debates, which highlight the intellectual prowess of Dominican students, saw St. Mary’s Academy and Orion Academy emerge victorious in the semi-final round, setting the stage for an anticipated finals showdown.

The competition kicked off with a debate on the government’s role in mitigating the impacts of brain drain on Dominica’s economy, healthcare, education, and society. Noah Sorhaindo and Jelani Shillingford of St. Mary’s Academy argued in favor, emphasizing the government’s pivotal role in creating an environment conducive to growth, which could prevent the migration of skilled labor. They highlighted the lack of local employment in foreign companies and the insufficient minimum wage as factors driving the brain drain.

In contrast, Reuan Thomas and Malia Bertrand from Arthur Waldron Seventh-day Adventist Academy presented a counterargument, suggesting that the responsibility should not rest solely on the government’s shoulders.

They pointed to the effective initiatives already in place by non-governmental organizations and the private sector, emphasizing a collective approach to address the issue, including skill development and mentorship programs.

Another debate focused on whether Dominican youth have been given adequate opportunities to make a positive economic impact.

Amelia Charles and Jo-Annel Serrant from Isaiah Thomas Secondary School advocated that the government and local organizations have provided substantial support through loans, scholarships, and training programs. Meanwhile, Dymond Daniel and Éhjadi Maxwell of the Orion Academy argued that despite available opportunities, there is a lack of awareness and accessibility, with some organizations being accused of favoritism.

In the end, St. Mary’s Academy and Orion Academy secured their spots in the finals, showcasing the depth of talent among Dominican youth in articulating and debating solutions for their country’s challenges.

The competition, sponsored by local businesses, not only offers a platform for students to engage in critical thinking and public speaking but also sheds light on important national issues, reflecting a vibrant culture of academic excellence and civic awareness in Dominica.
