The Orion Academy narrowly defeated Saint. Mary’s Academy in the Inter-Secondary Schools Debating Competition after a rigorous discussion on economic growth strategies for Dominica.
The debate, held on April 17, 2024, challenged students to evaluate the tourism industry’s role in Dominica’s economic landscape. Dymond Daniel and Ejahdi Jazz Maxwell from Orion Academy argued convincingly that while tourism is vital, it is too susceptible to global disruptions like pandemics and high air travel costs to be Dominica’s most valuable economic tool. They advocated for agriculture and the blue and green economies as more stable and sustainable options.
Noah Sorhaindo and Jelani Shillingford of St. Mary’s Academy defended the potential of tourism, highlighting ongoing projects such as an aerial tram and new resorts that promise to boost this sector. Despite their compelling arguments and Sorhaindo being named the best speaker of the debate, they narrowly lost with a score of 671 points against Orion’s 691.
Additionally, the finals celebrated outstanding individual talents with special awards. Noah Sorhaindo (SMA), Dymond Daniel (Orion), Thérèse LeBlanc (CHS), and Elianette Joly (DGS) were honored as memorable orators throughout the series, with their efforts recognized by Domlec. Isaiah Thomas Secondary School received accolades as the most improved team, reaching the semi-finals this year.
The winners, Orion Academy, received an all-expenses-paid trip to St. Lucia, sponsored by Western Illinois University, the National Cooperative Credit Union, the Insurance Company of the West Indies, and Josephine Gabriel & Co. Ltd. This prize underscores the value placed on intellectual discourse and critical thinking in shaping the future leaders of Dominica.
