Attorney General Condemns Opposition for Personal Attacks on Government Personalities

Attorney General Levi Peter said it is unpatriotic for the opposition party to see nothing good in what the government does. Peter said the opposition is fond of firing personal attacks on government personalities instead of judging their developmental programs. He advised the opposition to focus on tangible issues that affect the country and the people at large instead of castigating public functionaries unnecessarily.

The attorney general made this remark in response to comments credited to Senator Monelle Williams-Jno Baptiste that Dominicans should reject the latest budget on account of the prime minister who presented it. The senator is alleged to have said that “people reject the budget, not for what’s in it, but for who presented it.”

AG Peter found such remarks irresponsible and a disservice to the people, adding that it would only divide the people rather than unite them. He said the main role of the opposition in any democratic setting is to mount pressure on the ruling party for better governance, and not to tear such government down.

He also condemned the opposition for saying the current budget does not accommodate electoral reforms and that money was not set aside for this purpose. He said the budget provides monies for electoral parties for electoral reforms in the current budget, saying it is not correct for the opposition to say money was not allocated for electoral reforms.

He said the sum of $1.817 million is set aside in the budget for this purpose. He blamed the opposition for their smearing campaign of negativity on the present government, saying the Skerrit-led administration is well aware of the need for electoral reforms.
