This week, secondary school students in Dominica began taking the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) exams. The exams started on Monday, June 10, 2024, according to Magalie Celestine, Registrar of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).
The CCSLC exams, administered three years after the Grade Six National Assessment and two years before the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), serve as a crucial assessment tool for the Ministry of Education, teachers, principals, and parents to evaluate students’ competencies and academic progress. Celestine emphasized that these exams provide valuable insights into students’ readiness for the upcoming CSEC exams.
Students are being tested in seven subjects: English, Mathematics, Spanish, French, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and Digital Literacy. Notably, this year marks the first time that students from the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School and the Castle Bruce Secondary School are taking the Digital Literacy exams. Celestine expressed optimism about the inclusion of digital literacy, highlighting its importance in the current social media era and its role in helping students navigate the digital world responsibly.
In addition to the CCSLC exams, nine students are participating in the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) exams in garment production on Tuesday, June 11. These include six students from the Goodwill Secondary School and three from the North East Comprehensive School. Celestine welcomed the North East Comprehensive School’s inaugural participation in the CVQ exams and expressed gratitude for their involvement.
She praised the dedicated teams at both schools, led by Mrs. Jean-Jacques at Goodwill Secondary School and Miss Thomas at North East Comprehensive School, for their efforts in preparing the students. Celestine is hopeful for excellent results from all participating students.
As students continue to take these exams, the Ministry of Education, along with school administrators and parents, remains focused on supporting their academic development and ensuring they are well-prepared for future challenges.
