Minister of Education, Hon. Octavia Alfred, recently provided an overview of the 2023-2024 school year in Dominica, highlighting key achievements and challenges. Despite difficulties, particularly for the lowest-performing students, the academic year was deemed successful.

Graduation statistics were a focal point, with 327 students graduating from Dominica State College on July 10. Additionally, from May to July, 629 students graduated from secondary schools, representing 89% of all fifth-form students. For students who did not meet graduation criteria, they received a certificate indicating completion of the secondary program. Over 820 students are entering secondary school this year, and the Ministry of Education aims for a 100% completion rate for these students.

The government’s GATE (Government Assistance for Tertiary Education) program continues to provide scholarships and financial assistance, with data collection currently underway for recipients. Teacher engagement remains a priority, with over 90 teachers participating in summer workshops organized by the Dominica Association of Teachers in collaboration with the Canada Teachers Federation. These workshops cover various topics, including classroom management, online assessment, digital literacy, music, and theatre arts.

Dominica is leading the OECS (Organization of Eastern Caribbean States) in online learning, assessment, and digital curriculum, with plans to maintain this leadership position. Workshops focusing on technology and technological thinking are being conducted to engage students effectively. Additionally, 25 Ministry of Education officials are undergoing training in operational planning to support the new education sector plan.

The school year will conclude with the release of Caribbean CXC results, which will be officially released in Dominica this year, with a ceremony scheduled for August. Minister Alfred emphasized the importance of continuing to enhance education in Dominica, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. By focusing on technological advancements, teacher engagement, and comprehensive support systems, we are committed to providing a high-quality education for all.”
