Dominica Sends Strong Delegation to 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest

Dominica’s participation in the 45th Chess Olympiad, set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 10 to 23, 2024, is a significant event for the island. The Dominica Chess Federation is proud to announce a delegation comprising five male and five female players competing in the Open and Women’s tournaments. Moreover, Ian Dorival, president of the Federation, will attend the FIDE 2024 Congress from September 17 to 22.

The athletes representing Dominica in the Open Tournament are Robert Bridet, Jones Murphy, Larry Thomas, Nigel Francis, and Lyndon Auguiste. In the Women’s Tournament, the participants include Ayani Casimir, Liudmila Domennova, Zahidu Henry, Desalee Daniel, and Dorothy Jno Baptiste. These talented players were selected based on their impressive performances in national tournaments held earlier this year.

A notable highlight is that this marks the first time Dominica’s Chess Federation will field a Women’s team, aligning with FIDE’s initiative to promote greater female participation in the sport. Both teams have been rigorously preparing under the guidance of international coaches over the past several months to elevate their performance.

The event is organized biennially by FIDE and is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the chess world. It gathers national teams from around the globe to compete for gold medals, trophies, and the title of the world’s strongest chess nation. This year, over 190 teams are expected to participate in the Open section, with competition consisting of 11 rounds played in a Swiss team format, utilizing classical time controls of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The team with the highest match points at the tournament’s conclusion will be crowned the winner.

The Dominica Chess Federation has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support received, stating, “We extend our sincere thanks to the Dominica Olympic Committee for its ongoing partnership and investment in the Federation, which has made it possible for us to fulfill our mission of advancing and promoting chess on the island.”
