Dominica’s native languages—Kalinago, Kwéyòl, and Kokoy—will take center stage during the 11th Annual E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture, organized by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus Dominica in collaboration with the Division of Culture. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the UWI Auditorium.
This year’s lecture will feature a distinguished panel, including Mr. Prosper Paris discussing the influence of Kalinago on Dominica and Caribbean languages, Mr. Raymond Lawrence and Mrs. Ophelia Marie presenting on the development of Kwéyòl in Dominica, and Mr. Emanuel Prince exploring the role of Kokoy in Dominica’s cultural landscape.
This year, we seek to explore the influence of three of Dominica’s native languages: Kalinago, Kwéyòl, and Kokoy. Each has its own unique and rich history, blending to form a heritage that is truly Dominican.

The E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture series is a key event in the National Independence Calendar, paying tribute to Edward Oliver Le Blanc, Dominica’s first Premier. Known for his deep love of culture, reading, and poetry, Le Blanc’s legacy is honored through this annual event, which focuses on cultural themes of national importance.
The event aims to inspire and educate attendees on the rich linguistic heritage that forms an essential part of Dominica’s identity.
