Skerrit to Remain as DLP Leader Ahead of Upcoming Delegates’ Conference

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) is preparing for its highly anticipated Delegates’ Conference, set to take place on November 10, 2024, in Vieille Case. During this event, various party positions will be up for contest, and important party matters will be discussed. The conference is expected to draw both party members and supporters, with an open session for the public and a closed session where internal elections will be held.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking ahead of the conference, affirmed that there is no vacancy for the leadership position within the DLP.

In respect to the party leader, we don’t expect there to be any contest. The Prime Minister is in place, and of course, at the appropriate time, whenever there is a need for a new leader, there will be a peaceful and serious transition within the party.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

Skerrit, who has led the DLP since 2004, expressed confidence that his position as party leader would remain uncontested, ensuring continuity in the party’s leadership. He reflected on his long tenure, having taken over as Prime Minister following the death of Pierre Charles in 2004, and he has successfully led the party through multiple elections. In discussing his future, Skerrit acknowledged that he had previously considered stepping down, particularly after the DLP’s victory in the 2015 general elections. However, he ultimately decided to remain in his role to address challenges facing Dominica, including the opposition’s actions, which he believed were detrimental to the country.

As the conference approaches, the prime minister reiterated the importance of unity within the DLP and the need for a smooth transition of leadership when the time comes. He emphasized that while all other party positions would be open for contest, the leadership role remains firmly in his hands for the foreseeable future.
