National Bird of Dominica

The National Bird of Dominica is the Sisserou Parrot (Amazona imperialis), also called the Imperial Amazon. This stunning and rare bird is found exclusively in the mountainous rainforests of Dominica and plays a central role in the country’s Cultural Heritage. Its vibrant green and purple feathers make it a symbol of pride for Dominicans, and it is featured prominently on the country’s National Flag and Coat of Arms, symbolizing strength, resilience, and the nation’s commitment to preserving its natural environment.

Physical Features

Dominica’s National Bird is easily recognizable by its predominantly green body, striking purple-blue head, and violet-tinged wings. This parrot is one of the largest in the Amazon family, measuring up to 20 inches long with an impressive wingspan. Its unique appearance and influential presence in Dominica’s forests make it emblematic of the island’s rich biodiversity.

Habitat and Conservation

The island’s National Bird inhabits the Morne Diablotin National Park and Northern Forest Reserve, living in elevations as high as 600 to 1,300 meters. However, it is currently classified as critically endangered due to habitat destruction and natural disasters like hurricanes. Recent estimates show fewer than 50 mature Sisserou Parrots remain in the wild, making conservation efforts critical. Dominica actively protects the species through habitat preservation, education, and enforcement of laws against illegal trade.

Cultural and National Significance

The National Bird of Dominica is more than just a parrot in Dominica; it symbolises national pride. The bird’s resilience in environmental challenges mirrors the Dominican people’s spirit. It is celebrated annually during National Emblems Week and is a source of national unity. The bird’s presence on the flag reinforces its importance as part of the National Symbols that Dominicans honor with great pride.
