Francilla Agar

Francilla Agar, born on January 14, 1975, in Sineku, Kalinago Territory, Dominica, is a multi-talented individual known for her contributions to sports and the arts. As a former Olympic swimmer, she represented Dominica in the women’s 50-meter freestyle event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, competing in the international arena and showcasing Dominica’s sporting prowess.

Francilla Agar’s Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born in the Kalinago Territory, Francilla developed an early interest in the arts, dabbling in sketching and watercolour painting at the age of 12. By 14, she sold her first painting; by 16, she had already won a local painting competition. Her first solo art exhibition, held in 1999, showcased her skills in various mediums, including watercolour, pen and ink, charcoal, and acrylics. Inspired by local artists like Earl Etienne and Arnold Toulon, she continued to refine her craft.

Artistic Achievements and Exhibitions

Francilla’s second solo exhibition took place in 2022 at the Old Mill Cultural Centre in Dominica, where she presented 50 of her original works. Her art, which draws inspiration from the lush Caribbean forest and the contrasting Arizona desert, has been displayed in various galleries, including the Andrea Gallery in Scottsdale and 55 Main Gallery in Bisbee, Arizona. In addition to her artistic endeavors, she maintains a busy schedule as a music educator and pianist.

Swimming and Olympic Career

Francilla Agar competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the women’s 50-meter freestyle event. She participated under FINA’s Universality program and completed the race with a time of 32.22 seconds, though she did not advance to the semifinals. Despite the challenges, her participation brought international recognition to Dominica’s swimming talent.

Personal Life and Family

Francilla’s daughter, Jasmine Schofield, continues the family’s swimming legacy by competing for Dominica in sprint freestyle events, having represented the island at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris​.
