Hillsborough Bridge
The Hillsborough Bridge is a crucial infrastructural feature in Dominica, located in Layou Valley within Saint Joseph Parish. This parallel bridge, connected by the Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway, crosses the Layou River and is an essential link between Dominica’s north coast and the capital, Roseau. Initially constructed in 1902 as a single-lane bridge, it endured decades of use before suffering substantial damage in the wake of natural events, most notably Hurricane Maria in 2017, which left it unstable and needing significant repairs.
Hillsborough Bridge’s Reconstruction for Climate Resilience
In response to the damage, a $9 million project was launched to rebuild the Hillsborough Bridge with reinforced structures for climate resilience. Managed by Offshore Civil & Marine Inc., the new bridge features upgraded abutments and extended wing walls to withstand the Layou River’s strong currents better and protect against erosion. Officially completed in 2022, it is designed to be durable against future flooding, enhancing the safety and accessibility of the Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway.
Economic and Community Impact
This new, climate-resilient bridge revitalizes local economic activities, improving access for farmers, businesses, and tourists. As part of a larger infrastructure project funded by partnerships like the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), it aligns with Dominica’s broader climate adaptation and resilience strategy. The Hillsborough Bridge is a prime example of Dominica’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure, serving as a vital connector for the island’s communities.
