Foreign Minister Pleased With Induction of 91st Group of Peace Corps Volunteers

Minister for Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Francine Baron, has expressed delights at the induction of the 91st group of Peace Corps Volunteers to Dominica and the entire Eastern Caribbean. She revealed that Dominica has enjoyed 52 years of support from the U.S. Peace Corps Service and the U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in the areas of literacy and advocacy.

“Dominica has enjoyed a very strong friendship and relationship with the United States for many years,” Baron said. “We have collaborated on many matters, and we are pleased that you are here to strengthen that collaboration between our two countries. Madam Ambassador, the government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica are indeed grateful to the U.S. Peace Corps Service and the U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers for their continued dedicated service for the past 52 years to our country.”

She expressed satisfaction with the advocacy efforts initiated and sustained by the U.S. Peace Corps Service and the U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in Dominica, stating she was very pleased to be part of the induction ceremony where the Ambassador of the United States to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and OECS, Linda Tagliatela, was in attendance.

“I’m very pleased to witness and be part of the ceremony to induct the 91st group of Peace Corps Volunteers in the Eastern Caribbean,” the minister said. “Over the years the United States Peace Corps contribution to Dominica has been primarily in the field of education; however our Peace Corps has also worked in the area of small business development, the environment, information technology, youth development, gender affairs, community development, agriculture, sports, music, science and health education among others.”

Ambassador of the United States to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and OECS, Linda Tagliatela, disclosed that said the U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers are glad to be of service in Dominica and the Eastern Caribbean. She said many volunteers have stayed back in the country to raise families and even help when the hurricanes hit.

“Volunteers have integrated into every community to make life-long friends; some have even married and raised families here, and are not going back to the United States,” Tagliatela said. “Others have returned decades after their service to Dominica. All of them at some points have returned to the United States to share their wonderful love for Dominica, this is an incredible exchange of cultural personalities, and friendship. Peace Corps is committed to our work within Dominica and we look forward to strengthening our partnership.”
