Dominica Awards Keys to 60 New Homes Ahead of Christmas
Dominica’s housing initiatives continue to bring transformation to communities, with 60 families set to receive keys to their new homes today under the Housing Recovery Project (HRP) and the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) Program. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the State House Conference Centre at 3:00 PM.
Minister for Housing and Urban Development Melissa Poponne-Skerrit highlighted the significance of these housing projects in restoring stability and hope to families across the island. She emphasized that the achievement reflects not just numbers but real lives transformed. “This year alone under the Housing Recovery Project, we have proudly overseen the handing over of 102 homes to deserving families across Dominica,” she noted.
The minister underscored the importance of providing homes during the holiday season, ensuring that families have a safe and modern space to celebrate. “It is especially fitting that these homes are handed over right before Christmas, allowing families to create beautiful memories together in cozy and secure environments,” Poponne-Skerrit added.
The government’s housing program has reached families in need, and plans are underway to expand these efforts in the New Year. Poponne-Skerrit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing housing challenges, including launching new initiatives to rehouse vulnerable families and completing outstanding projects. Scotts Head is among the communities set to benefit from additional homes in 2025.
Alongside providing homes, the minister reiterated her dedication to eliminating pit latrines island-wide, ensuring families have access to dignified and modern sanitation facilities.
The Housing Recovery Project continues to serve as a cornerstone of Dominica’s rebuilding and resilience efforts, reflecting the government’s focus on fostering stability and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
