Dominica Council on Aging Hosts Engaging Members’ Social Event

The Dominica Council on Ageing’s Individual Members Social focused on fostering dialogue, community engagement, and advocacy for the island’s elderly population. Hosted on January 4, 2025, the event gathered members and stakeholders to review the organisation’s accomplishments, challenges, and future goals.

Participants highlighted the importance of the Council as a platform for like-minded individuals to connect and engage in meaningful activities. Several members shared that their involvement stemmed from opportunities to participate in advocacy and social events that offered a sense of joy, companionship, and purpose.

Life coach Joseph Clarke emphasized strengthening relationships between seniors and younger generations through mentorship programs. He suggested initiatives that allow youth pursuing careers in healthcare or gerontology to gain practical exposure while fostering intergenerational connections. Clarke also advocated for reshaping societal views on aging, calling for a positive narrative that values seniors’ wisdom while encouraging younger generations to contribute their technical skills.

Council Treasurer and Special Projects Officer, Mrs. Loranna Jno Baptiste, detailed the organization’s extensive contributions, such as outreach to 25 groups across Dominica and hosting events like the Valentine’s Day Dinner and Christmas Celebrations. She highlighted collaborations with the government, including establishing a National Policy on Aging and dialogues addressing seniors’ needs. However, setbacks from Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic have led to reduced membership and financial challenges, prompting the need for innovative fundraising solutions.

Mrs. Olivacee-Marie, Immediate Past President, addressed inclusivity and the necessity of group health insurance tailored for members. Challenges in meeting insurers’ criteria have stalled progress, but the Council remains committed to finding viable solutions that enhance seniors’ access to better healthcare.

The event concluded with a catered lunch and a Christmas gift exchange, emphasizing community-building and celebrating the Council’s achievements. Despite challenges, the Dominica Council on Ageing reaffirmed its dedication to improving seniors’ lives and called for innovative partnerships to sustain its advocacy efforts.

As the Council reflects on its progress, it aims to strengthen intergenerational collaboration and expand initiatives to support Dominica’s aging population while addressing evolving challenges.
