Dominica is mourning the loss of a distinguished legal professional, Evalina Baptiste, who passed away in the early hours of January 11, 2025, at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH). Baptiste, who held several prominent legal positions throughout her career, was a pillar of Dominica’s judicial system.
Reports from her family indicate that Baptiste, affectionately referred to as “Miss Baptiste,” passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after complaining of feeling unwell. Arrangements were being made to transport her overseas for further medical care when she succumbed to her condition.
Baptiste’s remarkable career spanned several decades, serving as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) from 2013 to her retirement in 2021. She succeeded Gene Pestaina and spent eight impactful years in the role, gaining widespread respect for her dedication to justice. Her contributions to the judiciary also included serving as Chief Magistrate and Registrar of Dominica’s High Court.
Additionally, Baptiste brought her expertise to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, serving as Registrar of the Court of Appeal in St. Lucia. Her impact extended beyond the courtroom, as she was also well-known for her involvement in Dominica’s cultural scene as an active Calypso Judge, further demonstrating her love for her homeland.
Baptiste’s family includes her brother, retired Justice of Appeal His Lordship Davidson Baptiste, reflecting a family legacy deeply rooted in the law. Her passing is a significant loss to Dominica’s legal and cultural community, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and passion for justice.
Plans for her funeral and tributes from the community are expected to follow in the coming days.
