One Mile

One Mile is a locality situated in Portsmouth, Dominica’s second-largest town. This area has gained prominence due to several significant agricultural and developmental projects aimed at bolstering the island’s agricultural sector.

Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre at One Mile

In May 2014, the Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre was officially inaugurated at One Mile. This state-of-the-art facility, constructed at a cost of EC$15 million, includes a smart greenhouse, a training center for farmers and extension officers, and a tissue culture laboratory. The center aims to enhance agricultural productivity by introducing advanced technologies and providing training to local farmers.

Agricultural Equipment Contributions

In February 2024, the Government of Dominica received agricultural equipment and materials valued at $750,000 from the People’s Republic of China. The handover took place at the One Mile Agricultural Station and included hydroponic demonstration systems, greenhouse maintenance materials, drip irrigation systems, agricultural tools, seeds, seedling trays, and machinery such as tractors. This contribution is part of the ongoing efforts to modernize Dominica’s agricultural sector and strengthen food security.

Agricultural Science Complex

In June 2022, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of a new Agricultural Science Complex at One Mile. This $10 million project, aided by China, is designed to produce clean planting materials for farmers engaged in commercial production. The facility will support scientific research, academic teaching, and the tissue culture of crop seedlings, aiming to produce 100,000 plant seedlings to improve food security through eco-friendly and innovative methods.

Coffee Plant Development

The One Mile area is also home to a coffee plant, which, as of early 2023, was projected to be fully operational by the end of the year. The Government of Dominica has taken full control of the shares and assets of the coffee company, VENEDOM, with the Government of Venezuela writing off the initial $10 million loan granted to establish the plant. This development is expected to boost local coffee production and contribute to the diversification of Dominica’s agricultural exports.

Natural Features and Surroundings

One Mile is strategically located near several of Portsmouth’s notable natural attractions:

  • Indian River: A short distance from One Mile, the Indian River offers serene boat tours through mangrove-lined waters, showcasing diverse flora and fauna.
  • Cabrits National Park: Situated northwest of One Mile, this park encompasses historical sites like Fort Shirley and provides panoramic views of the surrounding area.
  • Prince Rupert Bay: Adjacent to Portsmouth, this bay is known for its calm waters and is a hub for marine activities.

The area is accessible via the Northern Link Road connecting Portsmouth to other parts of the island, facilitating easy transportation of agricultural produce and movement of people.
