Mazhira Marie’s Solar Innovation Offers Hope for Water-Scarce Farms
In a remarkable display of innovation, first-form student Mazhira Marie from The Convent High School has captured attention with her solar-powered drip irrigation system, presented at the school’s recent science fair.
This project reflects her keen interest in environmental sustainability and resource management, aiming to offer a cost-effective solution for farmers facing water scarcity.
Mazhira, a resident of Belfast, shared that her love for science inspired her to develop this project. The system collects rainwater via rooftop guttering, storing it in a reservoir.
When activated by sunlight, a pump transfers the water to a tank, which then irrigates the plants through a drip system. After irrigation, the used water is filtered and returned to the reservoir, creating a sustainable water cycle. Highlighting the practical benefits, Mazhira explained that this system is particularly advantageous for farms in arid regions, where efficient water use is critical.
The entire project was built with a modest budget of EC$300, covering costs for the pump, batteries, and solar panel. Despite its affordability, the system’s design showcases both practicality and environmental consciousness.
Feedback from teachers and peers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing surprise at the complexity of Mazhira’s work given her age. Encouraged by this support, she is eager to present her project to a broader audience, hoping to collaborate with scientists and agricultural experts to further refine and implement her design.
Mazhira envisions her project as more than just a school assignment; she sees it as a stepping stone toward global agricultural sustainability. Her innovative approach not only addresses local farming challenges but also holds potential for widespread application, making her a young talent to watch in the field of environmental science.
