Dominica Moves Towards Fully Digital Healthcare System

Dominica’s healthcare system is on the brink of a major transformation as plans to fully digitalize medical services move forward. Every aspect of patient care, administration, and medical record management will soon be integrated into a comprehensive health management and information system, streamlining operations across the island’s hospitals and clinics.
The ambitious initiative is being executed under the Caribbean Digital Transformation Project and was confirmed by Project Manager Dr. Jermaine Jean-Pierre during a press conference this week. The new system, set to be deployed in three hospitals and 47 health centers, comes at a cost of US$8.5 million.
The implementation follows a contract signed on July 23, 2024, between the Government of Dominica and ACS Infotech Private Limited in collaboration with Manorama Infosolutions Private Limited. The goal is to improve efficiency and accessibility in healthcare, ensuring that patient information is securely and quickly available to medical professionals across the country.
With the digitalization of patient administration, clinical management, billing, and even morgue operations, the new system will significantly enhance healthcare services. Medical professionals will have immediate access to patient records, reducing redundancy and improving decision-making.
One of the key benefits highlighted is the system’s ability to streamline patient referrals. A doctor at a district health center can instantly access and share patient records with specialists at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital, eliminating the need for repeated consultations and expediting treatment.
Additionally, the introduction of telemedicine will enable doctors outside Dominica to consult on medical cases remotely, ensuring that patients receive specialized care without unnecessary delays.
In preparation for this transition, consultations have already taken place with doctors, nurses, and staff at primary healthcare facilities to ensure a smooth integration. Their feedback has been used to refine the system’s requirements, with further customization set to begin.
As the project moves into the next phase, the public will also have an opportunity to share their input before full-scale implementation begins.
