Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre

The Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre is a collaborative initiative between the governments of Dominica and the People’s Republic of China, established to enhance Dominica’s agricultural sector through the introduction of advanced farming techniques, modern equipment, and sustainable practices. Located in One Mile, Portsmouth, the center serves as a hub for agricultural innovation, research, and training, aiming to improve food security and support local farmers.

Background of the Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre

The partnership began in 2005 with the China-Dominica Agricultural Technical Cooperation Project, which involved sending Chinese agricultural experts to Dominica to establish a demonstration center and introduce new crop varieties and technologies. Initially situated in Hillsborough, the original center was destroyed by a flood in 2011. Subsequently, a new facility was constructed in One Mile, Portsmouth, and officially opened in May 2014.

Objectives and Achievements

The center focuses on several key areas:

  • Introduction of New Crop Varieties: Over 60 new varieties of fruits and vegetables have been successfully introduced, including broccoli, cauliflower, colored peppers, and Hami melons. These efforts have diversified local agriculture and reduced dependence on imports.
  • Training and Capacity Building: The center conducts regular training sessions for farmers, providing hands-on experience with modern farming techniques such as greenhouse cultivation, soilless culture, and biological pest control. By 2017, over 2,500 farmers and students had benefited from these programs.
  • Youth Engagement: Recognizing the importance of involving the younger generation in agriculture, the center hosts educational visits for primary and secondary school students, introducing them to modern farming practices and encouraging future participation in the sector.

Recent Developments

In February 2024, the Government of Dominica received equipment and materials valued at $750,000 from the People’s Republic of China as part of the eighth phase of the joint agricultural cooperation project. This contribution included hydroponic demonstration systems, greenhouse maintenance materials, agricultural tools, seeds, and machinery such as tractors. These resources aim to modernize agricultural production systems and enhance food security on the island.

Impact on Dominica’s Agriculture

The Dominica-China Modern Agricultural Centre has played a significant role in transforming the island’s agricultural landscape. By introducing new crop varieties and modern farming techniques, the center has increased local food production, reduced the cost of previously imported vegetables, and improved the livelihoods of many farmers. The emphasis on sustainable practices and climate resilience aligns with Dominica’s environmental conservation goals, ensuring the long-term viability of its agricultural sector.
