Amid growing frustration over deteriorating road conditions and excessive dust caused by heavy machinery transporting materials, Gregory Riviere, the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) caretaker for Marigot, has pledged swift action to address residents’ concerns. His statement follows protests in Sam’s Gutter, where roads were blocked as a call for urgent intervention from officials.
Recognizing the hardships faced by the community due to ongoing works for the Dominica International Airport Project, Riviere reaffirmed the DLP’s commitment to supporting affected constituents. He acknowledged the challenges posed by material transport from Hatton Garden’s quarry sites, which has resulted in worsening road conditions and significant dust exposure. However, he emphasized that these disruptions are part of a transformative project aimed at improving national connectivity, stimulating economic growth, and unlocking new opportunities for Dominicans.
To directly engage with the community, Riviere announced plans to meet with residents of Sam’s Gutter Today, February 11, 2025. He intends to hear their concerns firsthand and ensure that corrective measures are promptly implemented. Stressing the importance of mitigating the current impact on daily life, he outlined several key steps to be taken:
- Enhanced Dust Control Measures: A designated water truck will resume operations to suppress dust in the affected areas. Instructions have been issued to ensure the roads are sprayed at least three times daily to improve air quality and reduce health risks for residents.
- Road Repairs and Maintenance: The Public Works Corporation (PWC) has been tasked with repairing damaged roadways, beginning with sections near Melville Hall. These efforts aim to improve safety and accessibility for both drivers and pedestrians impacted by heavy traffic from construction vehicles.
Riviere reassured the community that their concerns were being taken seriously and that necessary interventions would be carried out as swiftly as possible. He emphasized that while progress comes with challenges, the long-term benefits of the international airport project will significantly outweigh the current inconveniences.
He urged residents to remain patient as solutions are implemented, reaffirming his dedication to working alongside them to ensure their voices are heard and their needs addressed.
